Our Track
Building a Scorpion Plus Track
This project started with a simple idea: create a track that’s as rewarding to build as it is to race. I’ve spent years around HO slot cars – racing, tuning, and running with local clubs – and I’ve always been drawn to the engineering side of the hobby. The Scorpion Plus ticked all the boxes. It’s a 3-in-1 design that can be set up in three different layouts, each offering a different balance of speed and precision. I’ve gone with a layout that has a long main straight and tighter, more technical sections that make racing these little cars a heap of fun.
The track itself was supplied by Willy Musgrave at THOR (formerly Viper Tracks) in the U.S. and is cut from Sintra, a high-density PVC sheet material routed with a CNC machine. Unlike click-together sectional track, a routed Sintra surface gives smooth joins, a consistent racing line, and excellent grip for the cars. The panels are custom-cut, slotted, and wired so the cars glide through the lanes with minimal bumps or gaps. It’s a level of quality you can feel the first time you pull the trigger.
This isn’t a finished “buy it and race it” track. I documented every stage of the build so you can see what goes into a professional-grade HO setup—planning, routing, wiring, and the little tweaks that make a big difference on race day.

Track Features and Build Process
Each stage was about getting the fundamentals right before moving on to the next. Here’s what was planned and already in motion:
- Controller Stations & Wiring
Each lane has its own dedicated power terminals and controller plug-ins. The wiring was laid out for consistent voltage and clean current delivery, so every driver gets the same punch out of the corners. - Power Taps & Soldering
To keep voltage even all the way around the circuit, extra power taps were soldered directly to the rails. These taps feed current to multiple points on the track, reducing voltage drop and giving every lane steady power no matter how far it is from the main supply. - Table Framing
The table got a solid frame all the way around. It keeps the track sturdy and square, giving the build a clean finished look, and add a bit of protection if a car gets a little wild. - Lexan Crash Barriers
Clear Lexan shields were fitted around the tighter, more technical sections. The polycarbonate construction makes them the perfect crash barrier, stopping cars from leaving the track while still letting spectators see every move. - Race Coordinator Timing System
Race Coordinator is our choice of timing system which captures every lap down to thousandths of a second. Drivers are be able to track personal bests, compare runs, and run proper race formats. - Finishing Touches
Driver stations, pit areas, and tidy cable management round out the build so the whole setup is easy to maintain and looks as sharp as it drives.
Photos and updates have been added as each step was completed – from the first routed panel to the final test laps. Whether you’re into the racing, the engineering, or just curious about how a top-tier HO track comes together, you can follow the journey here to see how the Scorpion Plus took shape.
